Downing Street parties

Thank you to everyone who got in touch about Boris Johnson’s conduct and for taking the time to inform me of your concerns.

From the outset, I can assure you that my SNP colleagues and I share your views. Boris Johnson has only held high office for two years yet has been embroiled in scandal after scandal. This Tory PM & his Cabinet have demonstrated overt corruption and dangerous self-interest throughout their time in Government, with little scrutiny and a significant lack of accountability.

This latest scandal, reports of boozy-lockdown parties held in Downing Street in May 2020, should be the final straw. While we were unable to visit our friends and families, unable to say goodbye to loved ones, battling feelings of anxiety and loneliness that came with the pandemic – it appears the PM and his most senior advisors were sending cheery emails inviting staff for drinks.

It is fundamentally wrong that our parliamentary democracy is threatened by an overzealous PM who not only consistently lies to the British public, but who has also sought to rip up the rules to protect his peers and colleagues. Unequivocally, those in power should not be able to change the system when they get a judgment they don’t like – yet Boris and the Conservative Party have consistently shown it is one rule for them, one rule for us.

During these unprecedented times, regaining public trust and confidence is the utmost priority and that can only occur when politicians are held to account for their actions.

It is clear that Boris Johnson has lost the trust of the people and scandal after scandal only proves he is woefully unfit to lead the country. He must listen to calls from across parties in both Westminster and Holyrood and tender his resignation immediately. The party is now well and truly over.

Thank you again for your email. I trust the above makes the views of both myself, and the wider SNP group, clear on the shambolic conduct of the Prime Minister recently and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
